Nearly after three quarters of a century of our independence, our education system is undergoing a sea change to provide some scope in enjoyment of learning to our learners at schools. It was long overdue. It is a big challenge and the ones who have understood the problems of our learners will surely welcome this newly introduced system of education under the umbrella of CBSE international. Learners Own Academy a pilot school of CBSE-International located at Jleeb Al Shyouk in Kuwait is the forerunner of this system on being a progressive and child centered school. Its academic fraternity wants education to become learner friendly and understanding to take deep roots in students.
Our traditional pedagogy of teaching through lectures or chalk and talk method has failed to satisfy our learners curiosity in this era of computer technology. Our students have plethora of questions related to almost all the topics they learn. They want to get into how, what, why, where, when like questions on each topic. The paucity of time, diverse subjects and themes in old curriculum, busy life styles of parents, and oceanic information on each topic does not let that happen, which is most required. Their questions are set aside to finish the syllabi and to train them in pocketing more marks and better grades through reproduction of the matter taught. Marks may be replaced by grades, but the overall objective does not change and that is the “result”. If we have to really improve the results and we want them to be authentic then the only answer is CBSE International Curriculum.
What, if the child gets centum score but has superficial knowledge in that subject. So the need is to change the very perspective of education for which parents send their children to school. The thrust for knowledge in students has to be satisfied. A young learner has numerous questions, which are either brushed aside or are considered irrelevant by the adults around. Gradually child stops questioning and starts fitting into that mould which has been prepared by the schools and the parents. An active learner becomes a passive learner. He learns to receive without question like a robot. Are we really looking for such robots as future citizens in our country? Perhaps not.
International curriculum started by Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi is a step in the right direction. It satisfies all the queries of all the students. Gives them enough time to read, understand, apply knowledge, research and to reach to conclusions empirically. It focuses on deep learning against superficial and shallow learning. It focuses on skills and allows the learners to go at their own pace. Children construct their own knowledge. They are provided with the tools to construct knowledge independently. It is believed that teaching is learning twice. If the students are able to explain their hypothesis, nothing more can be expected! International curriculum grants a lot of independence to the student to learn and it gives a lot of scope to a creative teacher to thrive. Text books may become the benchmarks but all believe that they are not an end in themselves. International curriculum is out to prove that knowledge has no terminals and children learn best when they enjoy it. This is the only method to grasp oceanic knowledge on each theme.
Parents’ fraternity needs to thank CBSE for making International bench marks available to them at a cheaper price. Indian parents have not to fend for other International school while looking for all these features in a school.
The existing curriculum of CBSE is based on the National Curricular framework-2005 catering to the needs of Indian populace. According to CBSE, the international curriculum will keep all the significant components of NCF as its base and is built on the same to provide a more learner friendly, stress free, and skill based approach. The international curriculum also provides opportunities for extended learning, development of perspectives, research orientation and social empowerment through work and action and a more liberal approach through art education, visual and performing. Further the international curriculum would provide alternate approaches to mathematics, learning at higher levels and inclusion of historical perspectives and components of the countries in which the school is situated. However, keeping in view the global requirements of learning there will be a few new elements in the content to keep the learners aware about the contemporary development.
The focus of international Curriculum is to provide a more learning –centric, interactive and participative pedagogy with stress on constructivist and enquiry and skill based learning. The curriculum will de emphasize rote learning and will promote thinking skills, analytical skills and communication skills to develop right and objective perspective facilitating independent judgement. These statements of CBSE prove that International Curriculum is a way ahead of traditional curriculum and is progressive in nature. This also certifies the fact that if we really want the schools to become the places of learning with laughter and fun , the international curriculum is the answer. An early bird catches a worm so is the case of Indian students, if they adopt this system at earlier stage, they will become stress free lifelong learners and will wear a smile of inner satisfaction and rejuvenation through empowerment which will come to them automatically with more internalization of knowledge with understanding as international curriculum envisages.
